Truthfully I hate giving out information to people that don't want to input and share...it's not fair to the rest of us..but oh well..
I've been taking a beating..day in day out...
you backtest and you find that the result you get is no where near to what happens on your live account.
everyone has sent comments from the forum here saying "earl your settings work great on a back test"
this is where I started to think...I forgot who posted it but they asked me what time chart I used the M1 or the M5..
well I replied the m5 because it gives modelling of 90%
that same person also asked me what chart I trade on? I said M1...
last night around 2AM(I don't sleep much) a light went off in my head...
why not trade on the M5:eek:???
so I put faps on M5..
lots 0
lrr 2
maxorders 10 so you know the risk is 20% of your account
stop time 1
aaa 20
bbb 8
tp 20
s/l 0
all 10 trades are bought together just like in the backtest...ewww
but it works... you can do less like 2 trades and lrr at 1%
backtest anytime frame yourself with those setting and you'll get decent returns...
Basically if your using faps on the M1 STOP!
try it on M5:D
I'm sure someone here knew this and is keeping it for themselves...LOL

Well while you're up at 2 AM do you think another stroke of genius might make you consider even higher timeframes with perhaps higher TP.
I ran a few quick tests up to half hour charts (from 01-01-08 till now) with some interesting results however not enough to say it will definately work.

I tried aaa 20, bbb 8 with the rest of the settings I use on M5 but with aaa 25, bbb 3 it seems to be a smoother ride to the top
I have just started optimization again and should be finished in just over 50hours :D
My settings might completely change then

Been running these settings since us open yesterday morning. Does have a floating loss down to around -245 since I pasted results above 10min ago. I went 0.08 on eurusd as it seemed to pick up more winning trades than other currency. I know lot size is high for account size.There are also 3 trades running per currency. Ill let ya know if it blows up over night...oh yeah still running demo.

Thats the way we have to do it! keep testing until we have a number of things that work!

My optimization still has 28 hours to go although I might stop it later on tonight and play with what I have
I am quite keen to see what will happen when I try optimize 15 min or even hour charts
Todays results... look how faps slowly raises the lot size as my money goes up...look at the opend trades...

Earl that is the EUR/USD 5 min chart is it right?that was trading done on the M5 EUR/USD using our pal faps..
that was yesterday not doing bad today pumped out the first longs I've seen this morning...killed those off...
I have 7 shorts with around a 19% drawdown right now...it's the biggest one I've seen thus far.. I think it'll come good after markets open at 9 this morning

While watching the election I thought I was on a M1 Chart, until I realized I was on a M5 chart.

I'm the one who questioned you on whether you were using the M1 or M5 chart on your live account.
Also I downloaded the latest version, thanks to your heads up, of FAPS and installed it on my live account with the following settings:
Chart = M5
Lots = 0
LRR = 1
Max Orders = 2
Max Lots - 1
Stop Time = 1
aaa = 20
bbb = 8
T/P = 50
S/L = 58 (Will equates to a S/L of 60 as FAPS takes into consideration the 2 Pip spread)
T/S = 15 (Does not seem to work as FAPS did not initiate the T/S when it was reached. I had to manually put it in and it worked after that but then I guess it was the MT4 platform making it follow the trade after that.)
MA Control = 1
Period MA = 50 (This setting, 50 EMA, came from yesterday's latest update on another EA, Forex Beater, that I also use. Seems to work)
Price MA = 0
Type MA = 1
All other settings are @ FAPS defaults.
So far it has opened & closed three profitable orders; one at the T/P of 50 Pips profit, one at the T/S of 21 Pips profit, and the other one at the T/S of 19 Pips profit.
Presently I have one trade still open with a guaranteed profit of 30 Pips due to the T/S kicking in. I did a manual T/S as FAPS didn't.
Is anybody else using a T/S and is FAPS kicking it in? I believe it is being kicked in on my Demo account but then that is the old version of FAPS.
Earl, I know you will not agree with my settings especially the S/L of 60, but my reasoning is if FAPS opens a trade in the wrong direction, which it does, I am only willing to allow it to lose 60 Pips and not 300 to infinity. This is also preserves my capital and allows FAPS to open other possible trades in the mean time instead of waiting for the market to turn around.
A good example of what I am trying to show, not prove, is presently in my Demo account, which is set for Max Orders of 2, opened two sell orders on 11/4 @ 0630 MT4 platform time.
Here we are now (11/6 0445 MT4 platform time) and the trades are down 334 & 299 Pips. They were down more than that at one time.
How long will it take for these orders to close before FAPS will get a chance to make other trades? Also consider the drawdown.
Okay Earl, you can fuss me but I remember you mentioning that maybe you were pushing the envelope and neglecting money management which is all I am trying to do. I would rather have a small losing trade, instead of a servere drawdown, and live to trade another day.
Update: That open order I had above was closed a short while ago with a T/S of 30 Pips profit.
FAPS turned around and opened two more orders.
Right now one is at break even with the T/S kicked in and the other is up 9 Pips.
Seems to be working so far.
Everyone, please let me know your thoughts and also any info you may have on the T/S problem I am having before I Email FAPS support.

Update: Both of the above open sell orders are now closed with a 20 & 19 Pip profit due to the T/S being hit. Note: The market was turning to a buy mode.
No orders open at this time by FAPS.

man what ever floats your boat...just keep posting...right now I'm testing adjustments to the Demarker.... which fluctuates between 0 up to 1
faps has it set at .2 thats why we get more sell than buys...I'm looking at moving it up to .07...
but still working on it

might as well take the risk on one trade
to keep it interesting you can raise your LRR to live on the edge

back testing looks great...but that last closeout trade always gets me.

What settings are you using now since you only trading one at a time? Thanks.
man..I say backtest to find settings that are comphy for yourself.
I like high risk...and I don't want to be the blame for you losing your account.
I backtest everyday all day.....
until I come up with something thats going to work for me
the settings are the same except you go down to 1 order....
lotriskreducer is best at 5% but you can go higher or lower depending on the amount of risk you like to take
but please please backtest these setting for yourself don't take my word for it.

I tried a forward test of tp=10 sl-=5 but it was jsut slowly losing ground. May try this setting because I find trailing stops with TP's of 30+ to be ineffective too.

Short...no I haven't posted those results....all the results are on my wife's computer and she rather not have her business all hanging out...

I think running your settings and charting the market is a way to go... With your lot % set so high you make a killing but when that market swings you better have a boat load of money in the account for the drawdown if your not ready to manually close the trade ... I have been doing all my testing with an amount I can afford so I can really see what would happen... Maybe thats stupid I dont know if it matters.....

Do what ever feels right to you.

Maybe I'm not understanding you. The drawdowns are part of the testing. If I had displayed the detail you would have seen this. Which factor are you referring to when you say Lot % is high?
The chart also shows results with S/l in use.
Data was tested from Jan 1 2008 - Nov 7 2008

I've back tested the same time frame starting Sunday Nov 2 with $10K. Real world trading must be much different than back testing because there's no way I've been able to come close to your net profit. I come in at $23k net profit and that's with 20% risk! So it looks like you've hit a home run with your settings. What am I doing wrong?

Results: on 3000K

what works for me might not work for you...thats why I always say backtest it for yourself and then decide.
I have 2 trades running just fine at 8% each as high a 9.3% each on my back test...dig a little deeper to find the answers.:D

Its easy to take the aaa bbb settings that somebody spent hours and hours finding then change a couple of variables and your a genius... Earl I think your challenge should have stated that that aaa bbb settings needed to be different.......

I closed 2...I was doing the 2 trade thing...back to 1 trade for me...I caught those before they got away. the 83 dollar trade would have been huge today. I find faps picks better trades when you just have 1...but that's just me

I wish I knew all the answers ...all I did was take what you graciously gave and followed your advice back test back test and more back testing.
All I tried to do was post results for others to use as they see fit. Is that being a sheep? For example the 7.5 over the long haul was the kiss of death.
At least that is what the back test showed. It also showed that if you pick the right time the results are fabulous. If .....
The problem with back testing is we tend to think the markets will behave the same way going forward and that is the big IF.
Ok I am back to watching my demo account performance based on settings derived from your inputs (oops that sounds sheepish....lol). Hopefully I can baa baa all the way to the bank ...rofl

Just to be fair. Isn't that what Earl did. Took a system (FAPS) that someone worked hours and hours on and changed some settings.

If you read any of the post you would have seen that I acknowledged Earl for his efforts and also followed his suggestion which was to back test back test and back test, which I did and published the results so that people could pick and choose their poison. So I didn't "steal" anything...I took what Earl gave and tried many variables over a 40 hour non stop testing period. And thanks to Earl I am going to ramp up and put my house kids wife and the dog on the line....rofl.. (take that back ....keeping the dog...rofl).

I got those calls but never responded because I know the upsell game. Maybe they should throw you a bone or two because here is a core group that is hopefully making good use of FAPS.
I had spent tons of time searching and reading everything I could on FAPS but to no avail...until I read Alan's blog. And every minute on this forum and on the backtest trail has been a worthwhile experience. So once again ...thank you. Now about that 5% rofl.

You don't need to spend your money when you can get it all for free here, with no pressure!! Someone had said that it was a bait and switch game. After you buy the program they try to get you to subscribe to something else for $500-$600.

I received that call as well. Just hang up and they will leave you alone (at least I haven't received a call back since). Anyway, do not fall into their bulls**t. They sold us an EA that WORKS, but you need the right settings for the right broker. They will lead you towards that profitable direction, but will probably never get you where you really want to be until they have milked you for all of your hard earned $$. Your best bet is to focus on this forum where crazy lads like Alan (ok, maybe not so crazy =p), Earl, and others can enlighten us.
Demo until confidence, micro until confidence, and unleash the pips with real $$.
Stay true to FAPS, she's a real looker.

I noticed on fapwinner they deal with hedging...
anyone understand this concept and can we get it to work here???

hey lets try and figure out the hedging
FAPWinners (sp?) sell the hedging EA as part of their Gold/Plat member packages, but I am not sure if it is worth it. I am trying to find more information on the EA itself as it is supposed to really help manage drawdowns better. I am still looking into this myself, but I do not want to become a member just to receive the hedging EA, unless it's absolutely worth it.

Well if you look at the results they post on their FAPS Weener website, they still seem to have a significant amount when they lose compared to their win amounts. so their drawdowns seem to be the same as the results of the settings posted on this forum.
Their results also show a number of months with negative pips.

Yeah... basically using your settings, but with max orders = 6 and LRR 7.5.
I think I'm gonna scale back to maybe 3-4 orders though.

I've already pulled my initial $1000 deposit out, so everything left in this account is pure profit, so not as big a deal if I lose it. And I'm gonna scale it back a little bit, just been playing with the settings the past couple days. :)

Well John I started at 1000 bucks... went down to as low as 311 then cam back as high as 3900...
but of course I caught a bad trade around is morning...faps didn't but until the darn thing went rock bottom... so I'm 170+ pips down.
Here is the debate close it out to stop the bleeding or wait for it to come good...LOL

I closed it out at about 100 pips. Took the loss.
I figure I'll make more with the trades today than that one loss.
So far I've been averaging 3 to 4% per day. Since the end of the month
Hopefully it will continue so I can get back up to my original investment.
I must say I'm being much more conservative than I was before.

Obviously, if you are running settings similar to Earls', and a lot of us are, then we should see trades opening and closing right along with each other. If we could brainstorm on these negative trades when they happen, I think we would come to the right conclusion for closing the trades or riding them out.

well fap has opened the same trade for me this morning.
but .. i don't know if it was a smart decision... i've just set the maxorders to 2 and then fap opened a few other orders which became profitable and the losing trade is still open, so i didn't miss a trade.. now the losing trade is about -60 pips.. so i think it'll turn into a winning trade soon..

I've already pulled my initial $1000 deposit out, so everything left in this account is pure profit, so not as big a deal if I lose it. And I'm gonna scale it back a little bit, just been playing with the settings the past couple days. :)

I had two trades open up at the same point... at about 1.2410... I closed them out too, before they got too out of hand. :(
I got out around 1.2512...which was a $900+ loss.....

H4 and D! trendlines are still intact. H1 was broken but the spike is too strong to sustain. I think the downtrend will continue. My bad trade is still open on both live and demo accounts. suprisingly the demo didnt blow up. It looks like it should have. anyway the live accou nt is holding its own. suspect it will come back in the next day or three.
In the meantime I continue to rack up trades. They hedge against the bad trade or add to my equity so its all good for now.
up to 4800 on live and 12000 on demo.
I close out both bad trades on my live account and on my demo....the demo picked up another sell at 1.2381 and is currently -284 in the hole...
after I closed out my big loser I turnned faps off..LOL only after I swore at it a few times:D
the funning thing was I woke up at 4 am this morning....and I saw that damn trade when it was around -70 pip...LOL
I put my finger on the trigger but I decided to sleep it off and pray it would come good in the morning

I should have pulled the trigger ...came home from work and shuddered at the 3 sell trades that FAPS had opened in the A.M. Now Iam down over 300 pips....... moving finger toward that button as we speak....rofl

So you initiate trades to take advantage of the swings?
Do you scalp? Last night I did this on my demo account and ran it up to 190,000. The Faps sell trades are still open and killing my gains. I'm close to closing those bad trades.
new rule of thumb...if you watch most of the trades they last around an hour
anything more than a few hours it might be a good idea to close it out

No this is all FAP.
The demo account is running at full speed
The live is at a moderately conservative level that can handle this drawdown without much difficulty.
I have multiple trades running on both accounts but have increased stop times to fend off having five open trades going bad.
Each account has one bad trade that I think will turn around.
Going to bring my laptop to work and swing by the library to keep an eye on things.

I decide to ride it out and those trades have recovered not all but getting better.
On my 3000 account Faps did open more trades which closed in the plus while the big negative trades are recovering.

What is you MA setting?
If you set it at 21 FAP will trade long more often on those upswings.
But in general Bryan is right. The medium and long term trends are down.
Place FAP on the usd/chf and it will make mostly long trades.

Hey Earl. Thanks for the settings and the timeframe they seem to be consistent. Now if we could only stop FAPS from selling bottoms before a breakout to the upside out of a consolidation. Have you tested the hedging software?
I have nothing yet...there is a member working on a hedge script but that won't be until sunday...
I myself will be doing some serious testing over the week end.

You don't have a loss yet, you just have a draw down. If your account can handle it, let FAPS work it's magic, as you are to far into it to guarantee much in the way of a gain if you close it an realize the loss now.

Also the EUR/USD broke below support in an upward channel before closing. That does not mean that it won't have moved up over the weekend but it is a great signfor more downward movement. You may recover more pips than you think. Anyway, if you haven't closed manually by now, you will have to wait and see as the market is obviously closed now.

I did not alter the default settings for MA. I'm not sure of the measurement of stop time. I did notice in a series of tests that changing stop time had no impact so I left it at 8 for this test.

The one thing I would caution readers about, is the use of Lotriskreducer.
It works great once you gain momentum (profits) in your trades. But you run the risk of a blowout if you start at the wrong time. A possible scenario is to start with the default and move the Lotriskreducer after you have accumulated a decent profit. Unfortunately I could not do this during the back testing.

Hi everyone... very glad I found this forum, for I too - like you - am an optimizin' fool. Mind you I haven't yet bought ForexAutoPilot, but I plan on doing so soon and am just doing some background research on it first - but liking what I see so far.
I used to do a fair amount of system programming and optimizing with Easy Language (TradeStation, SuperCharts) some years ago so I'm hoping I can pick up the MetaTrader programming language quickly enough. I'm excited to do some of my own tweaks on ForexAutoPilot.
Some questions for you guys - and I guess particularly Earl, since he seems to be the main cat on this forum:
(1) I notice that FAP comes with a default setting of no stop loss at all. Frankly, this scares me. Has anyone tried a backtest with varying amounts of stop loss? Even a very wide stop loss would make me more comfortable than none at all.
(2) On a similar note, I think the default Take Profit is 255 pips, if i'm not mistaken. That's a pretty big profit target. Has anyone tried a backtest with smaller Take Profit levels?
(3) In TradeStation, you could do an optimization run for more than one parameter at a time - I'm assuming you can also do this with MetaTrader? If so, then a very obvious, yet interesting run would be to simply step though various values for both Stop Loss and Take Profit simultaneously (while leaving all other settings as is) and see what pops out. Once an optimal stop loss/take profit combo is found, then one could tinker with the other parameters (...and there does seem to be a lot of parameters).
(4) There's this website - www.fap-winner.com - that will sell you (for $399) their "advanced" settings for ForexAutoPilot. Has anyone tried this?
(5) Can an EA in MetaTrader "call" another EA? In other words, can you "embed" them? Reason I ask this is - I read somewhere that FAP seems to have a habit of giving it's entry signals a few bars too early, or something to that effect. If one could make a "parent" EA that then invoked FAP, then the parent EA could take control and delay the entry signal obtained from FAP for a few bars, and *then* place the order.
(6) Finally, in MetaTrader, how much historical data (tick-by-tick) is available to do backtests? Do brokerages make this data fully available even in demo mode?
Lot of questions... I know! Hopefully I can jump in and contribute something to the pot soon!

Faps default is 20 not 255

I have done some serious backtesting with stoploss variable.
The best value was 250. But the yield was much less than stoploss = 0

Hey guys love this site and appreciate all the info you have selflessly provided. I have done some back testing but have noticed that my broker does not seem to have all the history data that your brokers have. So my backtesting results could be limited or skewed.

I'm not getting the same results either. What is your MA set at?
I updated my time frames...and now I didn't get the same results as before:(
witth 1 trade it works pretty good...but has a bad drop in oct...where the other settings kill it
rerunning it now..will post results...maybe I entered something wrong...
I noticed yyou had 256 errors...I had the same so I updated my history
now there is only 10 errors...

I'm guessing that the 5-6 consecutivelosses occur at the august 2008 demon drop?
I have found that Changing the period MA to 21 tightens up the lag of the trend shift resulting in more buys at the right time. The general trend is down so why would I want to trade long except when price just crossed up through the 21 MA.
Also because FAP has no exit strategy other than TP I thought it was best to lower it to 10 thereby increasing the chanc e of a quick exit and limiting risk.

I have forward tested this on M! with great results this week even with the whipsaw.
Unfortunately I have not figured out how to backtest. I know its dumb but I just cant figure out what I'm doing wrong!

I am considering lowering my TP even more to five.
Once my live has paid off my equity I will begin mpre agressive trading. The ten percent is kicking ass.
I've been setting my MA at 30... which seems to kick ass..when ass needs kickin...
with the hedge program I think we will be unstoppable
