Broker Business Model

I'm wondering what the business model of MT4 brokers is.

Are they market makers, which we are trading against - for us to make money, they must lose ... or are they making their money from the spread and therefore quite happy for us to make money, the more trades the better.

Which is it, or something else?

I think they make money from the spread..
