Default PC-Safety

Hello Forum,

before I got FAP and started the trading, my PC was not interesting for anyone who might send me viruses, trojans, spyware and things like that.
Because I just used the PC in my sparetime, wrote a bit in forums, watched youtube or used it for getting information.

But not, I think, my 3 mt4's contains some sensitive information.

Because safety is important, since I got Internet nearly 9 years ago, I am using AntiVir.
Why do I use it? Because the basic version is free. The basic version protects for free against any virus. And compared to Norton, they send the updates every day. Since last year, there is even a Sunday update and even on Christmas, I got updates.
The basic version doesn't protect against Ad- and Spyware and many other dangerous things.

http://www.avira.com/en/solutions/home_home_office.html

So I am thinking now to upgrade my member ship.. Which was like I said for free for years. And could be for free longer. But I don't want, that my new challenge get damage by any bad softwaredeveloper, who just want to pity normal people...

So what do you think?
Did one of you rise up it's computer safety?

Thank you for any opinion,

snoopye1970

I'm an IT professional and my recommendation is AVG. You can pick it up for free @ free.avg.com. The latest version has antivirus and antispyware protection. It has very few processes that would drag your system down like Norton and Mcafee are prone to do.

On top of that, get a router if you don't already have one. Forget software firewalls, most of them are worthless (to the lay person that is) and interefere with the normal operations of the PC. A router is a hardware firewall and about as safe as your going to get without hampering your online functionality or reducing your computers performance. Also, check any P2P programs you may have, aka limewire, kazaa, morpheus, etc and make sure you're not sharing folders that shouldn't be shared, such as My Documents or any other folders where you store personal data.

Beyond that, there's really nothing more that an a-typical home user needs. If however you are truly concerned about the data from your MT4's, then I suggest looking into the VPS service. Then, you can infect your computer all day long and not worry about your trading.

That's an impressive list,

I'm testing the MetaTrader 4 platform running under ubuntu.
If all goes well then there is no need for any of the above software.

And still 100% free...

Ubutu is great I got it running on my laptop (as my "secure login" station) and I love it.

I presume you're using Wine to run MT4 on ubuntu.

I'm not a big fan of spybot, however Malwarebytes and Combofix are excellent tools. But, you usually don't need them until you get an infection lol

Smitfraudfix and SDFix also work great in conjunction with Combofix. I am armed with these little utilities at all times

Really? Why not? I find spybot quite useful - especially the resident "TeaTimer" which serves to warn me of any registry changes and whatnot.

Smitfraudfix and SDFix are both great utilities btw I use them on a regular basis too. For nasty rootkits I'd recommed you look into "gmer" (http://www.gmer.net/index.php)

Also Panda Activescan (online) is rather useful too - and free.

Wine is definitely the way to go, seems to run most (But not all) windows apps.

The issue I'm having with it, is that the autopilot settings don't like to be edited. I think it's yet another odd missing font error.

Editing the saved settings and re-applying them doesn't allow the authentication key to be verified.

Is there a font type used in mt4 that is windows specific and thus not in the default wine settings?

Everything else is working fine - but that issue alone is a biggie.

Yeah I can see why that is a biggie. There is a way to get around that though. You can first save the settings as a .set file and the simply manually edit it and load it every time you make any changes. I know this method sucks, but it should work IF you can at the very least get the "save" and "load' buttons to work.

I'm not sure about the windows specific font. Have you tried copying all available windows fonts over to the wine installation?

I've already tried editing and loading the .set file.
All of the basic settings are loaded in the journal, but even though the key number is correct it still gives me an unauthenticated error.

This is the only hurdle I have to get it going, so I'm going to be trying to apply other advisors to the chart and see if they stick.

If it keeps having issues under Wine, then I'll launch my xp virtual image and run it in there.

>>> Edited >>>
Wine works perfectly fine, as long as you use the F2 key instead of double clicking....
And I'm an idiot, the authentication issue is only due to the autopilot key being tied to both the tower and the account. change either one or both, and your key is invalid.

So ubuntu will run mt4 and advisors just fine in wine.
